Stephen Newlove, conductor, is Music Director of St Helens Choral Society and in September 2019 was appointed Music Director of Sandbach Choral Society. He is very much looking forward to working with the choir and building on its excellent reputation in the region. In addition to conducting Stephen has forged a successful singing career and has performed solo tenor for many choral societies throughout the country. Furthermore, he enjoys composing and has had several works premiered.
Stephen Newlove was born in Driffield, East Yorkshire and sang as a chorister in Beverley Minster before studying for a music degree at Huddersfield, followed by a postgraduate masters in composition at the University of Hull. As an experienced cathedral singer in the choirs of York Minster, Chester and Manchester Cathedrals, Stephen has broadcast on radio and television and featured on a number of acclaimed recordings. He has also sung with the Britten Singers (formerly the BBC Northern Singers).
Stephen has a varied and extensive repertoire covering all eras of music from the renaissance through to the twentieth century. Solo engagements include Monteverdi Vespers of 1610 with the Orchestra of the Golden Age and His Majesty’s Sagbutts and Cornetts, arias in Bach St John Passion with the English Haydn Orchestra and Mass in B minor with Manchester Camerata, Evangelist in Bach St Matthew and John Passions, arias and Evangelist in Christmas Oratorio, Magnificat, and many of the Bach Cantatas.
In recent times memorable performances have included Handel Messiah, Saul, and, Passion of Christ, Charpentier Messe de Minuit pour Noël, Haydn Stabat Mater, Creation, Marie Theresa Mass, Nelson Mass, Missa Sancti Nicolai, Missa in Tempore Belli, and Harmoniemesse, Mozart Requiem and Great C minor Mass, Schubert Mass in E flat and G, Rossini Petite Messe Solennelle, Stabat Mater, Dvorak Stabat Mater, Mass in D and Requiem, Mendelssohn Elijah, St Paul and Hymn of Praise, Puccini Messe Di Gloria, Verdi Requiem, Janacek Otcenas, Elgar The Kingdom, George Dyson Canterbury Pilgrims, Britten St Nicolas Cantata, Ramírez Misa Criolla, Peter Maxwell Davies Solstice of Light, Andrew Carter Song of Stillness, Jonathan Willcocks Lux Perpetua.
Stephen has been invited to perform with many choral societies in the North West, Cumbria, Wales, Yorkshire, Shropshire including East Riding County Choir, Birmingham and Bradford Festival Choral Societies, Carlisle International Summer Festival, Cockermouth Harmonic Society, Ripon, Harrogate, St Asaph, Nantwich, Sandbach, Shrewsbury and Ludlow Choral Societies, St Peters Singers - Leeds. Notable venues have included Carlisle, Ripon, St Asaph, Sheffield, Manchester and Chester Cathedrals, Beverley Minster, The Royal Hall - Harrogate, Adrian Boult Hall - Birmingham, Leeds Town Hall and Parish Church, St George’s Hall - Bradford.
In his spare time Stephen enjoys running, gardening and watching cricket.
